PDCE Lightning Protection Equipment

A completely new lightning protection equipment: PDCE

  • PDCE will change the lightning strike countermeasures from “letting it strike” to “not allowing it to strike”
  • Approximately 2,800 PDCEs have been installed in Japan, and not a single case of “lightning damage” has been reported since their installation. (Except for winter thunderstorms on the Sea of Japan side).
  • Conventional lightning rods can also be replaced simply by changing the tip of the lightning rod. (Please note that the support tube shall be replaced for increased strength.)

How PDCE Lightning Protection Equipment Works

When thunderclouds approach, conventional lightning rods are charged with a positive potential, the same as on the ground, and attract the negatively charged lower part of the thundercloud to induce a lightning strike.
The PDCE converts the positive potential on the ground into a negative potential by inserting an insulator, which repels the negative potential at the lower part of the thundercloud. Besides, the spherical tip of the PDCE makes it more difficult for lightning to strike.

When a large lightning strike occurs, it generates a powerful electromagnetic pulse. In today's technology-driven world, where electronic components like ICs are highly integrated, equipment can be easily damaged by such pulses. It is widely known that routers, servers, PCs, TVs, and other information equipment installed indoors can be damaged, but damage to social infrastructure such as elevator control equipment, water tower control equipment, and security cameras and intrusion sensors that are indispensable for security can also be devastating. The amount of damage is estimated to exceed 1 trillion yen per year in Japan alone.

The lightning rod invented by Benjamin Franklin 270 years ago continues to be used to this day in much the same form, but it is not enough to protect the foundations of our information society.

  • First, small discharges called stepped leaders are repeatedly generated from the inside of the thundercloud towards the ground, creating ionized pathways in the air little by little.
  • The stepped leaders branch out in various directions, and when one of the branches reaches the ground or a lightning rod, a return stroke is generated from the ground or rod in the opposite direction toward the thundercloud.
  • The contact between the stepped leader extending from the thunder cloud and the return stroke from the ground causes a large electric shock (lightning strike) with a high voltage and large current of several tens of kiloamperes flowing instantaneously.
  • Even if the stepped leader reaches the vicinity of the PDCE, no return stroke occurs because the top of the PDCE is at the same negative potential as the bottom of the thundercloud.
    This prevents the formation of ionized pathways between the thundercloud and the PDCE, and consequently does not lead to lightning strikes.
